I once read something on social media, a thread someone put together documenting the illness of a loved one. The person who wrote the thread was very religious and discussed how they were praying to God for the ill person to experience various improvements. At the end of the thread the poster revealed that the person they were praying for died but they were sure God heard every sent prayer, and they expressed how good God is. I’m very sympathetic about wanting to see a loved one get well but the poster was in denial: their belief system had failed them and they were attempting to make it seem otherwise. The fact of the matter is, the poster’s experience is not unusual as many people have prayed to God, asking God for something or other, and they didn’t get it. Some people insist that they have prayed to God for something and got exactly what they prayed for. I don’t deny that this can happen but praying to God with requests is not a reliable practice, and I believe most people know this. But why? Why doesn’t God reliably grant our request prayers?
